How Skill Zone Files Your Trademark

A trademark that actually protects your brand is not just a filing — it is six disciplines executed together: clearance search, class selection, application drafting, filing, monitoring and post-registration management. Here is how we run each.

Clearance Search

Every filing starts with a trademark search of the USPTO or UK IPO database — checking for confusingly similar marks in the same class. Elite extends this to a comprehensive search with patent search report. Filing without a search is the single biggest reason applications get refused.

Class Selection & Strategy

Trademark protection is class-specific. Starter covers one class; Platinum two; Elite three. For e-commerce sellers, Class 35 (retail services) often pairs with the relevant product class. We identify the right classes to protect both the product and the way you sell it.

Application Drafting & Filing

We draft the goods/services description precisely — too narrow and you waste protection; too broad and the application gets refused. Standard character or stylized format chosen based on your brand's evolution plans. Filing handled end-to-end with USPTO or UK IPO.

Office Action Support

Roughly 70% of US trademark applications receive an Office Action. Platinum and Elite include Office Action support — drafting substantive responses to refusals, identification objections and Section 2(d) likelihood-of-confusion challenges so the application progresses to registration.

Progress Tracking & Monitoring

Filing monitoring, status updates and registration progress tracking — all included on Platinum and Elite. You receive notifications at every stage so the application never sits idle waiting for a deadline to expire. Trademark filings have strict response windows.

Long-Term Monitoring & Renewals

Elite includes long-term monitoring support — watching for infringers, renewal deadlines (Section 8 declarations at year 5, full renewals every 10 years) and brand protection actions. A trademark you forget to renew is a trademark you lose.

03FAQs
Which jurisdictions do you file in?
USPTO (United States) and UK IPO (United Kingdom). For multi-jurisdiction protection across the EU or via Madrid Protocol international filings, we scope on a case-by-case basis. Most e-commerce sellers start with US filing for Amazon Brand Registry, then add UK or EU as expansion targets.
Do you perform a clearance search before filing?
Yes — every package includes a trademark search of the relevant database. Filing without checking for similar marks is the single biggest reason applications get refused. Elite includes a comprehensive search plus patent search report for brands needing maximum due diligence.
How many classes should I file under?
Class selection depends on what you actually sell and how. Most e-commerce sellers benefit from Class 35 (retail services) plus the relevant product class (e.g., Class 25 for apparel, Class 3 for beauty). We map class strategy during onboarding so protection covers your real activities.
How long does trademark registration take?
USPTO: 8-14 months from filing to registration (longer if Office Actions arise). UK IPO: 4-6 months typical. Trademark protection actually begins from the filing date — registration certificates come later, but you can claim "TM" status as soon as the application is filed.
What is an Office Action and why does it matter?
An Office Action is an objection or refusal from the trademark examiner — most commonly identification objections, likelihood-of-confusion challenges, or specimen refusals. Roughly 70% of US applications receive one. Platinum and Elite include drafting substantive responses so the application progresses to registration.
Why is pricing custom?
Government filing fees vary by jurisdiction and class count — USPTO fees are roughly $250-350 per class; UK IPO around £170 for the first class. Pricing also depends on whether you need a comprehensive search, patent search report, or ongoing monitoring. Custom pricing keeps quotes transparent rather than hiding government fees.
Do I need a registered trademark for Amazon Brand Registry?
Yes — Amazon Brand Registry requires either a registered trademark or an active trademark application from an approved IP office. USPTO and UK IPO both qualify. Once registered, you can also enrol in Brand Registry and access A+ Content, Stores and Brand Analytics.
What happens after registration?
Elite includes long-term monitoring — watching for infringers and managing renewal deadlines. USPTO trademarks require a Section 8 declaration of continued use between years 5-6, full renewal every 10 years. Missed deadlines cancel the registration. Renewals and brand protection are handled through our ongoing legal support.
